Tso Moriri Lake Travel Guide

Tso Moriri is a high-altitude lake in the Changthang region of Ladakh, India, situated at an elevation of approximately 4,522 meters (14,836 ft). It is the largest high-altitude lake entirely within India and is designated as a Ramsar Wetland site due to its ecological significance.

When to Go

The best time to visit Tso Moriri is during the summer months, from May to September. During this period, the weather is relatively mild, and the roads leading to the lake are typically open and accessible.

Winters are extremely harsh, with heavy snowfall closing routes and temperatures dropping significantly. Travel during these months is generally not advisable due to severe conditions and limited services.

Getting There

Tso Moriri is accessible primarily by road from Leh. The journey typically takes about 7-8 hours, covering a distance of approximately 220 kilometers, often via Mahe Bridge or Chanthang.

An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for all visitors to Tso Moriri, as it lies close to the Line of Actual Control. Permits can be obtained online or through tour operators in Leh.

Practical Notes

Due to the extreme altitude, acclimatization in Leh for at least 2-3 days before heading to Tso Moriri is crucial. Visitors should be aware of the symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS).

Accommodation options are limited, primarily consisting of guesthouses and tented camps in Korzok village. Facilities are basic, and electricity and mobile network coverage are often unreliable or absent.

It is important to carry warm clothing, sufficient water, essential medicines, and basic provisions. Visitors are encouraged to minimize their environmental impact and respect the pristine nature of the region.

Culture and Local Life

The area around Tso Moriri is inhabited by the semi-nomadic Changpa people, who herd pashmina goats, yaks, and sheep. Their traditional way of life, closely tied to the land, can be observed.

Korzok village serves as a significant cultural center for the Changpa. The annual Korzok Gustor festival, usually held in July or August, showcases vibrant masked dances and traditional ceremonies, attracting both locals and a few intrepid travelers.
