Hunder is a small village located in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, India. It is situated on the banks of the Shyok River and is famous for its unique cold desert landscape, expansive sand dunes, and the presence of Bactrian camels.

Camel safaris are a popular activity, offering a distinct way to experience the sand dunes. The nearby Diskit Monastery, featuring a large Buddha statue, provides panoramic views of the Nubra Valley and is often visited alongside Hunder.

When to go

The best time to visit Hunder is during the summer months, from May to September. During this period, the weather is relatively mild and pleasant, making travel and outdoor activities comfortable.

Winters, from October to April, are extremely cold with heavy snowfall, often leading to road closures and making travel challenging. Many guesthouses and facilities close down during the off-season.

Getting there

Hunder is typically accessed by road from Leh, approximately 125 kilometers away. The journey involves crossing the Khardung La pass, one of the highest motorable passes in the world.

Visitors can hire private taxis, join shared jeeps, or ride motorcycles to reach Hunder. It is often part of a two-day itinerary covering the Nubra Valley, including Diskit and Turtuk. An Inner Line Permit is required for all non-local visitors.

Getting around

The village of Hunder itself is small and can be explored on foot. For activities within the sand dunes, Bactrian camel rides are a traditional and practical mode of transport, allowing visitors to traverse the sandy terrain.

Travel between Hunder and other Nubra Valley villages like Diskit is usually done via hired taxis or private vehicles. Public transport options are limited and infrequent.

Practical notes

Due to the high altitude, visitors should acclimatize in Leh for at least 24-48 hours before proceeding to Hunder. It is advisable to carry basic medicines for altitude sickness.

Accommodation options range from guesthouses and homestays to some tented camps. Electricity and internet connectivity can be intermittent, especially outside the main village areas. ATMs are scarce, so carrying sufficient cash is recommended.
